*Batman (1943) 15-chapter theatrical serial from Columbia Pictures
6.1 Rating 260 min (15 Chapters)
The Batman/Bruce Wayne and his young assistant, Robin the Boy Wonder/Dick Grayson hit on the trail of a Japanese sabotage ring, when Bruce's girl friend, Linda Page asks him to help her free her uncle, Martin Warren, who has been abducted by the sabotage ring. Dr. Tito Daka, leader of the gang, plans to steal the city's supply of radium and forces Warren to locate the vault where it is stored. Daka sends his henchmen, along with a zombie, which he controls by the means of a special microphone, to steal the precious metal, but Batman follows and succeeds in routing the gang in a terrific battle. One of the captured henchmen reveals the radium was to have been taken to The House of the Open Door. Disguised, the dauntless duo, Batman and Robin visit that hideout and find Linda bound, gagged and unconscious. Linda is rescued. Daka transforms Warren into a zombie and plots the derailment of a heavily laden supply train, but once again, he is thwarted by the crime-fighter and his young pal. Trap and counter-trap follow in breath-taking rapidity as the Batman and the Japanese agent who would steal America's Victory Plans, following the cowardly 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, wage all-out war on each other.
Country: United States Genre: Thriller, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Action, Crime Release: July 16, 1943 Based on: Batman by Bill Finger & Bob Kane (Detective Comics #27 in May 1939)
Director: Lambert Hillyer Production: Columbia Pictures Cast: Lewis Wilson as Bruce Wayne / Batman Douglas Croft as Richard "Dick" Grayson / Robin J. Wilson as Police Captain Arnold
Batman is notable for being the first appearance on film of Batman and for debuting story elements that quickly became permanent parts of the Batman character's mythos, such as the Batcave and its secret entrance through a grandfather clock inside Wayne Manor. The serial also changed the course of how Alfred's physical appearance was depicted in future Batman stories. At the time Batman was released in theaters, Alfred was drawn as a portly gentleman in the comics. Subsequent issues suddenly depicted Alfred as slim and sporting a thin moustache, following actor William Austin's appearance.

*Batman 1: (1989)
7.5 Rating 126 min The Dark Knight of Gotham City begins his war on crime with his first major enemy being the clownishly homicidal Joker, who has seized control of Gotham's underworld.
Gotham City: dark, dangerous, 'protected' only by a mostly corrupt police department. Despite the best efforts of D.A. Harvey Dent and police commissioner Jim Gordon, the city becomes increasingly unsafe...until a Dark Knight arises. We all know criminals are a superstitious, cowardly lot...so his disguise must be able to strike terror into their hearts. He becomes a bat. Enter Vicky Vale, a prize-winning photo journalist who wants to uncover the secret of the mysterious "bat-man". And enter Jack Napier, one-time enforcer for Boss Grissom, horribly disfigured after a firefight in a chemical factory...who, devoid of the last vestiges of sanity, seizes control of Gotham's underworld as the psychotic, unpredictable Clown Prince of Crime...the Joker. Gotham's only hope, it seems, lies in this dark, brooding vigilante. And just how does billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne fit into all of this.
Country: United States, United Kingdom Genre: Superhero, Adventure, Action Release: June 19, 1989 Director: Tim Burton Production: Warner Bros, Polygram Filmed Entertainment, The Guber-Peters Company Cast:

Max Eckhardt Liza Ross as tourist mom Garrick Hagon as tourist dad Adrian Meyers as tourist son David Baxt as Thomas Wayne Sharon Holm as Martha Wayne
The success of Batman prompted Warner Bros. Animation to create the acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series, as a result beginning the long-running DC Animated Universe
The film primarily adapts and then diverges from the "Red Hood" origin story for the Joker, having Batman inadvertently cause gangster Jack Napier to fall into Axis Chemical acid, triggering his transformation into the psychotic Joker.
Mob boss Carl Grissom sends his sociopathic second-in-command Jack Napier to raid Axis Chemicals and retrieve incriminating evidence. However, this is secretly a ploy to have Napier murdered for sleeping with Grissom's mistress Alicia Hunt. Corrupt lieutenant Max Eckhardt arranges the hit on Napier by conducting an unauthorized police operation. However, Commissioner James Gordon arrives, takes command, and orders the officers to capture Napier alive. Batman also appears, while Napier kills Eckhardt as revenge for the double-crossing. During a scuffle with Batman, Napier topples off a catwalk and falls into a vat of chemicals. Although presumed dead, Napier survives with various disfigurements including chalk white skin and emerald-green hair and nails. He undergoes surgery to repair the damage, but ends up with a rictus grin. Driven insane by his new appearance, Napier, now calling himself "the Joker", kills Grissom, massacres Grissom's associates, and takes over his operations.

Costumes worn by little people were slightly larger than the animatronics; the actors controlled walking, the mechanized heads were remote-controlled and the wings were puppeteered. Dyed black chicken feathers were used for the penguin bodies. McCreery's designs for the penguin army initially included a flamethrower, which was replaced with a rocket launcher. Mechanical-effects designers Richard Landon and Craig Caton-Largent supervised the manufacture of the animatronics, which required nearly 200 different mechanical parts to control the head, neck, eyes, beak, and wings. Boss Film Studios produced the CGI penguins.
Bo Welch designed the Batboat vehicle, a programmable batarang, and the Penguin's weaponized umbrellas. He added features to the Batmobile, such as detaching much of its exterior to fit through tighter spaces; this version was called the "Batmissile"

Crowley started the process of designing the Tumbler for the film by model bashing. Crowley used the nose cone of a P-38 Lightning model to serve as the chassis for the Tumbler's turbine engine. Six models of the Tumbler were built to 1:12 scale in the course of four months. Following the scale model creation, a crew of over 30 people, including Crowley and engineers Chris Culvert and Annie Smith, carved a full-size replica of the Tumbler out of a large block of Styrofoam in two months. Four street-ready race cars were constructed, with each vehicle possessing 65 panels and costing $250,000 to build. One version was the flap version, which had hydraulics and flaps to detail the close-up shots where the vehicle propelled itself through the air. The other version was the jet version, in which an actual jet engine was mounted onto the vehicle, fueled by six propane tanks. The visibility inside the vehicle was poor, so monitors were connected to cameras on the vehicle body. The professional drivers for the Tumblers practiced driving the vehicles for six months before they drove on the streets of Chicago for the film's scenes. The design and development process took nine months and cost several million dollars.
