A Buford Pusser Festival is held each May in his hometown of Adamsville, Tennessee.
As sheriff, Pusser was credited with surviving seven stabbings and eight shootings.

Still distraught over his wife's death, he blows up every moonshine still in McNairy county and burns the brothels and whiskey joints to the ground. Having gone too far, he's voted out of office but that doesn't stop the mob from seeking their revenge. Buford soon discovers how small his town is when he runs out of highway with the mob on his trail.

Ex-military Nick Prescott returns to his hometown. His father, the sheriff, tries to stand up against a brutal gang of ruthless criminals who intimidate and blackmail the people to sell them their business. He is then killed by the gang's leader Harvey Morris. With the help of an FBI agent and a few old friends, Nick himself becomes the sheriff and vows to do everything in his power to destroy the gang, their ruthless leader and win back his city.
There was some controversy before this film's release, as Dwana Pusser (daughter of Buford Pusser) released a statement on her website condemning this movie and its upcoming sequel, saying "I have read the scripts and they are very vulgar."
